Critical Security Flaws in Cisco IOS XE Addressed with New Patches

Network devices such as routers and switches quietly keep organizations connected, directing traffic between users, applications, and the internet. These devices sit at the core of enterprise networks, vulnerabilities affecting these devices can have far-reaching consequences if left unpatched.

Cisco has released security updates for multiple vulnerabilities affecting Cisco IOS XE Software, as they are high-value targets for attackers seeking privileged access or opportunities to disrupt business operations. Timely remediation is therefore essential to reduce the risk of compromise.

Threat Overview

The vulnerabilities affect Cisco IOS XE, the operating system that powers many Cisco enterprise routers, switches, and wireless controllers.

If exploited, attackers could gain unauthorized access to affected devices, execute commands with elevated privileges, or cause services to become unavailable. A successful compromise of network infrastructure could also provide a stepping-stone for further attacks against systems connected to the network.

Vulnerability Details

Cisco addressed multiple vulnerabilities affecting Cisco IOS XE Software, with three flaws posing the highest risk to enterprise environments:

  • CVE-2025-20337 (CVSS 10.0 – Critical) – A Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Remote Code Execution vulnerability that could allow an authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with root privileges on an affected device. In simple terms, an attacker with valid SNMP credentials could take full control of the device.  
  • CVE-2025-20338 (CVSS 10.0 – Critical) – A second SNMP Remote Code Execution vulnerability affecting Cisco IOS and IOS XE devices. Like CVE-2025-20337, successful exploitation could enable an attacker to run malicious code with the highest level of system privileges, potentially compromising the network infrastructure.  
  • CVE-2025-20352 (CVSS 7.7 – High) – A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the SNMP subsystem. A buffer overflow occurs when more data is written to memory than it can safely hold, which can cause a device to crash or, under certain conditions, allow an attacker to execute malicious code. Cisco has confirmed this vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild, making prompt patching a priority.  

Why It Matters

These vulnerabilities affect SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), a protocol widely used by administrators to remotely monitor and manage network devices. A compromised router or switch can provide attackers with greater visibility into network traffic, opportunities to pivot to other systems, or the ability to disrupt business operations.

Because these devices are often exposed to administrative users and critical services, delaying security updates increases the risk of compromise as technical details become publicly available.
